Decks & Outdoor Living Spaces for Massachusetts Homes

Massachusetts summers are too good to spend indoors. A well-designed outdoor living space — whether a simple composite deck or a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with a screened porch — extends your home's functional area and becomes one of the most-used spaces on your property.

Kenmore Construction Group designs and builds outdoor living spaces that are architecturally integrated with your home, built for New England's climate, and maintained their beauty for decades.

Common Questions

Decks & Outdoor Living — FAQ

Composite materials (Trex, TimberTech) are popular for low maintenance — they won't splinter, warp, or require annual sealing, and they hold up well to Massachusetts's freeze-thaw cycles. Ipe (Brazilian hardwood) is extremely durable and beautiful but costs more. Pressure-treated wood is budget-friendly but requires ongoing maintenance. We advise based on your goals.
Generally yes, if the deck is attached to your house or larger than 200 square feet. Permits require structural drawings showing footing sizes, post dimensions, and beam sizes. We manage the permit process.
Composite decks typically last 25–30 years with minimal maintenance. Ipe can last 40+ years. Pressure-treated wood typically lasts 15–25 years with proper maintenance (annual sealing). The structure (framing and footings) should last the life of the house if properly built.
A straightforward composite deck with cable railing typically runs $30–$60 per square foot installed. Multi-level decks, premium materials, pergolas, or outdoor kitchens increase costs significantly. A 400 sq ft deck might run $20,000–$35,000; a full outdoor kitchen setup can add $25,000+.
A screened porch has screens in the openings — functional spring through fall, but open to cold air in winter. A three-season room adds windows (operable or removable) to extend the season. Neither is a four-season space without insulation and heating.
